Connection & Professional Balance
Resident well being extends beyond the hospital, it’s about connection, purpose, and balance.
A few times a month, residents gather for happy hours, trivia nights, and informal meetups that strengthen camaraderie and foster friendships.
Moonlighting
As residents progress, PGY-3 and PGY-4 trainees are also eligible to moonlight within the Northwell Health network, gaining clinical independence and supplemental experience while maintaining work–life balance.
Wellness Noon Conference Series
Hosted by the Psychiatry and Psychology departments, this lecture series explores resilience, mindfulness, meditation, and mental health awareness. Sessions include annual talks on sleep deprivation, burnout, and cognitive strategies for maintaining work–life balance.

Life Maintenance Days
Every resident receives one Life Maintenance Day per quarter, no questions asked. This time is dedicated to personal errands, self-care, or anything that helps maintain balance and wellness.

Mentorship
At the beginning of training, each resident is paired with a faculty mentor aligned with their professional interests. Mentors serve as trusted advisors to discuss academic goals, challenges, and personal well-being. Meetings occur several times per year, ensuring continuous growth and support throughout residency.

A Culture of Care
Resident well-being is a cornerstone of the North Shore–LIJ Neurology Residency. From mentorship and mental health resources to retreats and social events, our program ensures residents feel supported, connected, and empowered to care for themselves while caring for others.
Counseling & Mental Health Services
Residents have 24/7 access to the Northwell Health Psychology Hotline, and free mental health counseling services for all trainees. Confidential, compassionate, and easily accessible because caring for yourself is part of being an excellent physician.
